Solo Piano Series: Liam Noble

After two wonderful concerts by Julie Sassoon and Eyolf Dale, Improvised Music Company are delighted to announce Liam Noble as the third act of our Solo Piano Series on the 5th of June at midday in the spectacular setting of the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. This wonderful FREE event is perfect post brunch entertainment.

he wanders wilfully off the track of a well-known standard... just far enough to make it sound both comfortably familiar and disturbingly strange.” – The Guardian

Liam Noble, jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator from London, studied music at Oxford University and jazz at The Guildhall school of Music in London. Beginning his reputation of note playing with artists like Stan Sulzmann, Anita Wardell, John Stephens and Harry Beckett, Noble released his first solo album in 1994 which contained a mix of standards, originals and improvisations, a mixture that has characterized his music ever since.

"makes this unlikely choice of standard seem amusingly angular. A dry tenderness peeps through..but it’s held in check by Noble’s fascination with pattern and sound.” – The Telegraph

Throughout his rich career, Noble’s compositional eye for structure and versatility as an artist has allowed him to explore longer compositional forms and unorthodox improvisational structures in the 2001 record “In the Meantime” as well as marking a new foray into electronica in 2002 in a commission from Birmingham Jazz based on Japanese Death Poetry. He has released 2 albums with free improv trio “Sleepthief” (2008,20011) and gained further acclaim with the Bobby Wellins Quartet on the 2009 CD “BRUBECK”, gaining an almost unprecedented 5 star review in The Guardian.

"an inspiration and a challenge for me to carry on in the avenues that you [Noble] have opened" – Dave Brubeck

Other artists Noble has performed and recorded with include Phil Robson, Drew Gress, Tom Rainey, Christine Tobin, Paul Clarvis and Julian Siegel as well as Mary Halverson, Marc Ducret, Mat Maneri, Evan Parker, Okkyung Lee and Peter Evans. His trio with Chris Bachelor and Shabaka Hutchings also received venerable recognition.

Noble’s first solo record for 20 years is virtuosic and inventively programmed, yet also reflective and elegant.” - The Telegraph

Having just released his second solo album “A Room Somewhere” this time last year, we are delighted to celebrate its success with this solo performance.
